You need to know where you want to go in your business. Small business owners need to know their desired destination. Only by first knowing the where you want to go in your business, can you hope to get there. Knowing your destination is a great strategy to empower you to grow your small business.

Where do you want to go? Generally, people do not pack a bag, get in a taxi, drive to the airport and then pick where they want to go. People plan out their travels. For example, more complex vacations might be planned out months in advance. Vacation goers might read about destinations, compare hotels and shop for the best airfares. Yet, small business owners often fail to do the same destination planning in their business.

Know the desired destination for your business. What markets do you want to serve? How big do you want to be? Only by first knowing this final destination can you hope to take the proper steps to get there. A client a short time ago asked me about promoting his book. He had a specific niched book and was excited about the types of books stores at which he could sell it.

I asked him about the goals for his business and there was a significant mismatch. He had huge goals to grow his business. GREAT! I am a big fan of huge goals. We calculated that, in a best-case scenario, he would sell 700 books a year if his plan were a huge success. That is good number, but not great. He had huge growth plans, but was taking action that would not take him to that destination. He needed a huge sales and distribution plan to accomplish huge growth.

Ask yourself what the destination is for your small business. Are you taking the proper steps to get to that destination? Knowing your destination is a powerful strategy to help you grow your small business.

Could you use more tips like this to accelerate the growth of your small business?
